Mountain wonders: The Nuns Valley

Begin at Pico dos Barcelos, one of Funchal’s most iconic viewpoints, with 360° views over the city, harbor, and surrounding mountains.

Ascend to Eira do Serrado at 1,094 m and take a short, easy walk to the viewpoint overlooking the serene Nuns Valley. Visit the small local shop for traditional souvenirs.

Continue into Curral das Freiras and admire Pico do Gato from below, passing the dramatic slopes and terraces where locals still work the land. Stop in the village center for an hour to explore, taste chestnut custards, breads, and local liqueurs, and enjoy the valley’s quiet atmosphere.

On the return to Funchal, pass through the areas connected to Cristiano Ronaldo, adding a touch of local history to the journey.
