ITINERARY

Click on the button “Google Maps” to access our specially designed walking tour, featuring the best free attractions in Funchal.

We recommend starting this tour from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., or in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. These times ensure you can visit all attractions when they are open.

Begin at Funchal’s cathedral, known as the heart of the city. The Sé Cathedral, dating back to 1517, showcases beautiful architecture with intricate details.

Next, head down Rua da Carreira, passing by local restaurants towards the iconic English Church. Here, you can enjoy a serene garden and admire the unique 200-year-old Protestant church and a monument to Queen Elizabeth.

Ascend the steep Rua do Quebra Costas (translated as “Backbone-breaking Road”) to a viewpoint offering panoramic views of Funchal’s historic centre. Nearby, you’ll find three important attractions: the Museu das Cruzes, the Convento de Santa Clara, and the Universo das Memórias museum. Feel free to explore any of these, and check their opening hours beforehand.

Follow our map to reach Saint John’s Castle, offering breathtaking panoramic views with just a short walk. (Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)

From here, your route descends past the historic “old hospital,” Cruz Vermelha, built in 1865. Proceed along Rua dos Ferreiros to discover wine lodges where you can sample delicious Madeiran wines. Continue to Praça do Município (Municipal Square) where you can visit one of Madeira’s most beautiful churches, Igreja dos Jesuítas, built in 1595. For a unique view, consider paying approximately €1.50 to climb the church tower. Also at this square, visit Funchal’s city hall or the Art Museum.

Cross from the historic centre to Funchal’s famous Old Town. Along Rua Fernão Ornelas, indulge in shopping and try our tasty local bread (Bolo do Caco) at the kiosks, known as the most commercial area on the island.

Complete your tour at the farmers’ market, where exotic fruits abound and you can practice your bargaining skills with the locals. (Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

Nearby, explore the Old Town and visit the Fortress of São Tiago, built in 1614, or enjoy a cocktail at Bar Barreirinha, renowned for its views, atmosphere, and friendly service.

We recommend printing this itinerary for easier navigation while using Google Maps directions.
