Experience a self-guided journey, wandering through the city with Google Maps as your guide. Dive into our recommendations for a personalized exploration of Funchal's rich culture and charm.

By clicking on the link above; “Directions”, you can see our designed walking tour on Google Maps with the best free attractions in Funchal.

We suggest you go on this tour from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. or in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (These are the best schedules to see all attractions open.)

You start at Funchal’s cathedral, best known to locals as the heart of the city. The Sé Cathedral dates back to 1517, and there you can see our beautiful architecture full of details.

Next, you lead to Rua da Carreira, where you are going to pass by many local restaurants in the direction of the famous English Church. There, you can contemplate a beautiful garden, a very different 200-year-old protestant church, and a monument to Queen Elizabeth.

Going up the healing road of Rua do Quebra Costas (the translation: road that breaks backbones), you find a viewpoint for contemplating the historic center of Funchal. In the next corner, you have three important attractions: the Museu das Cruzes, the Convento de Santa Clara, and the museum Universo das Memórias. Feel free to choose any of those attractions, and please check the opening times before you get there.

From there, follow our map and ascend to Saint John’s Castle to have the best panoramic views while walking a short distance in Funchal. (Opening time: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Lucky for you, after this part, you do not need to go up any higher areas again.

Going down, you are going to pass by the “old hospital”: Cruz Vermelha (Red Cross), built in 1865. Arriving at the Rua dos Ferreiros and going down this road, you find wine lodges where you can try out our delicious Madeiran wine, and further, you get to the Praça do Municipio (Municipal Square). You can visit one of the most beautiful churches in Madeira, the Igreja dos Jesuítas, 1595, and for approx. €1,50 you can go up the tower for a unique view. As well, at this main square, visit Funchal’s city hall or the Art Museum.

From there, you start the crossing from the historic center to the famous Funchal’s old town. Whenever you get to the Rua Fernão Ornelas, it is the perfect place to go shopping and try out our tasty local bread (Bolo do Caco) around the kiosks. This is the most commercial area on the whole island.

Therefore, to finish this walking tour, you head to the farmers market, where you can see many exotic fruits and practice your bargaining skills with the locals (opening hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

Around this area, you have the whole old town to explore; moreover, you can visit the Fortress of Saint Tiago, 1614, or, if you prefer, enjoy a cocktail at Bar Barreirinha, one of the most famous bars in Funchal, for its views, environment, and friendly service.

We recommend printing this itinerary for better usage while you take the directions from Google Maps.

Hope you enjoy it,
